ZCA Buildings Plan

The Zero Carbon Australia Buildings Plan is the first comprehensive, nationwide retrofit plan for Australia's building sector and demonstrates how all existing buildings can reach zero emissions from their operation within ten years. It sets out how Australia can transform the building stock to reduce energy bills, generate energy income, improve the comfort, enjoyment and health aspects of our living spaces, and improve worker productivity. 

Extensive research, modelling, and analysis have led to the selection of a suite of widely applicable technologies and strategies aimed at de-carbonising the existing building stock. Broadly these are: electrification by replacing gas fired services with efficient electric alternatives; fully insulating; upgrading glazing, shading, draught proofing; LED lighting; Energy Management Systems; rooftop solar photovoltaic; and significantly increasing the efficiency rating on electrical appliances.

These measures in combination were found to achieve a 60-80% reduction in common building types and when implemented across the national building stock will lead to a halving of residential and non-residential energy demand. The report is due to be released in July 2013.
